On behalf of Malaysian Indian Congress, it’s Youth Wing and Hindus in Malaysia, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Inspector General of Police of Malaysia, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, Deputy Prime Minister who is also the Home Minister, YAB Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Bin Hamidi, in cancelling a provocative forum titled ” Similarities between Hinduism and Islam” by Dr.Zakir Naik which was supposed to be held on the 17th April 2016 in UTEM Melaka.

The MIC Youth sparked off a campaign to put a halt to this seditious forum by making lodging police reports nationwide and till far, more than 150 reports has been lodged. This not only shows commitment on the part of MIC Youth towards the community but also the commitment of our Barisan Nasional Leaders and the IGP in preserving harmony and understanding the moderate path of one’s right in practicing their respective religions in our country.

In the past, one Dr.Ulil from Indonesia was banned by the Malaysian government to speak in Malaysia. Even our own opposition MP’s are banned from entering Sabah and Sarawak but a person like Dr.Zakir Naik is still allowed entry. We urge the government to look into issues of extremism and ban speakers such as Dr.Zakir Naik for good. Although we are relieved that the forum “Similarities between Hinduism and Islam” is cancelled, we are still very much in doubt over the other talks he is bound to hold in our country. Precedents has been set by countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom in banning individuals who provoke racial and religious sentiments. Malaysian government must follow suit.

I would like to take this opportunity in thanking our MIC Youths, NGOs and all parties concerned nationwide, who might have left commitments on a weekend in lodging the reports. This wouldn’t have been possible without all of you. Thank you also to our President, Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam and Youth Leader, Chief Sivarraajh Chandran who supported us all along.
