It has been brought to my attention in respect of a statement issued by Ramesh Rao, the President of Pertubuhan Minda & Sosial Prihatin Malaysia. This statement has also been published in various media today.
There is no absolute need for Ramesh Rao come to any defence in regards to statements made by parties of the coalition of Barisan Nasional. In fact, there is no need for Ramesh Rao to stand defensive of Islam. This is because of the collective stand taken by YB Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam including other leaders of MIC, MCA, Gerakan and SUPP does not in any way condemn, belittle or even challenge the religion of Islam. We are not even taking the Prime Minister to task over this matter, as the Prime Minister has always been supportive and attentive to the needs of all races and religion of this country.
I strongly urge Ramesh Rao to first understand the statements and stand made by leaders in regards to Hudud. In order to help him understand better and bring this matter to clarity, let me reiterate our stand.
Implementation of Hudud will bring about the dual track justice system and this goes against the constitution. We are concerned that the tabling of the Private Members Bill by YB Tuan Haji Hadi Awang, may bring about the birth of implementation of the Hudud laws not only in Kelantan but other states too. Although it is said that the laws are only applicable to Muslims, there will then be divisiveness in the Criminal Justice System of Malaysia and resulting in contravention of Article 8 of the Federal Constitution.
This has nothing to do with the practice of the religion of Islam. I understand the spirit and stewardship of Ramesh Rao in coming to the defense of the Prime Minister but I would like to stress and remind him that we, the coalition of Barisan Nasional, instills a very strong sense of unity amongst us UMNO, MCA, MIC and other parties and are in no way questioning the rights of individuals professing religion of Islam.
I hope this statement will shed some light in the hope that Ramesh Rao will understand our stand better. We in Barisan Nasional respect the Federal Constitution, Islam as the official religion of Malaysia and Datuk Seri Najib Razak as the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Our stand on Hudud is nothing short of this.
