AIMST

`
In The Beginning
Malaysia, one of the fastest developing countries in the region and with a national vision to reach developed status by 2020, has seen an upsurge of activity in the educational arena. The Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) is the first private university in the country to offer a range of science and technology-based programmes. It was founded on March 15, 2001, arising from an invitation by the Minister of Education to the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED). MIED is the educational arm of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), a component party of the Government of Malaysian, which has been ruling the country since the birth of the nation in 1957. Imbued with the vision of its founders, AIMST is on the road to becoming a premier private sector university in the country and region catering to the needs of local and international students. It aspires to provide quality technical education at affordable costs, in programmes covering medicine and health sciences, applied sciences, engineering, computer technology as well as business and management. The curricula for some of the degree programmes, especially medicine and engineering, are modeled on that of the University of Bristol in Great Britian.

Where We Are
AIMST is located in the northern Malaysian state of Kedah Darul Aman. The permanent campus is at the foothills of picturesque Gunung Jerai in Semeling, a national park rich in biological diversity native on the tropics. The purpose-built 230-acre campus, currently under construction is expected to be completed by September 2004. Self-contained and equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facilities, the campus will have purpose-built student and staff residences and a Student Complex replete with facilities, such as bank, post office, book store, computer shop, gymnasium, etc., a Sports Stadium, an Experimental Theatre and an Olympic-size swimming pool as well as other essential campus facilities for students, staff and visitors.

In the interim period, AIMST operates from its RM8 Million campus at Amanjaya in Sungai Petani about 15 km from its permanent site. The three Faculties of Medicine and Health Science, Engineering and Computer Technology and Applied Sciences have already been established and several approved programmes have been launched. A pre-university programme offered by the Centre for Matriculation and Foundation Studies feeds students readily into the degree programmes offered by the faculties. Excellent facilities exist at the Amanjaya campus for the initial delivery of these programmes.
